AI Search Brief, July 2026: What Actually Changed and What UAE Businesses Should Do Next
By Dr. Farzana Irshad Munshi
Every few months something in search changes and everyone writes a panic post about it. Most of the time the panic is louder than the change. July 2026 was different. Four things happened in a single month that, taken together, alter how customers will find your business for the rest of the year.
This brief is the short, practical version. What happened, what it means, and what a business owner in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah should actually do about it. No hype, no doom.
1. Google AI Mode passed one billion monthly users
AI Mode is the version of Google search that answers your question directly in a conversation, instead of handing you ten blue links. Google confirmed it crossed one billion monthly users, with query volume roughly doubling every quarter since it launched.
Read that again. Doubling every quarter. Not growing steadily. Doubling.
The reason this matters for a business owner is simple. A billion people are now getting answers rather than links. If your business is not part of the answer, you are not part of the decision. You do not get a second chance further down the page, because for a growing share of searches there is no page any more.
2. A controlled study measured the real click loss
For two years, Google and the SEO industry argued about whether AI Overviews actually cost websites traffic. Google said the clicks that remain are higher quality. Publishers said they were losing everything. Both sides were using their own numbers.
In July, the first randomised experiment on AI Overviews was published. It measured a 39.8% drop in clicks when an AI Overview appears. More importantly, it found the clicks that disappear are no lower in quality than the ones that stay. That directly contradicts the claim that AI search only strips out low-intent browsers.
Separately, publisher click data showed a 58% fall. Different sample, same direction.
So the honest summary is this. If you rank on page one today and an AI answer appears above you, expect to lose roughly four in every ten clicks you used to get. Your ranking did not change. Your traffic did.
3. The EU fined Google 890 million euros and put AI Mode on notice
The European Commission issued its first Digital Markets Act fine against Google, 890 million euros, for self-preferencing in Search and steering in the Play Store. In the same statement, the Commission said it will examine how Google applies the same anti-self-preferencing rules to AI Overviews and AI Mode.
That second part is the interesting one. Regulators are now looking directly at whether AI answers unfairly favour Google's own properties. Nobody knows how that lands, but it tells you the format is not going to be left alone.
4. AI Overviews launched in France, the last major holdout
France was the final large market without AI Overviews or AI Mode. Both went live on 22 July, two months ahead of the deadline Google had given French publishers. The terms include an opt-out that does not affect classic search results, plus compensation under neighbouring rights.
For UAE businesses the French detail itself does not matter much. What matters is the pattern. The rollout is now effectively global, and the negotiated opt-out terms are the template other markets will point at.
What this actually means for a UAE business
Put the four together and you get a clear picture. AI answers are now the default surface, they measurably cost you clicks, and the format is spreading faster than the rules governing it.
There is a common but wrong conclusion here, which is that SEO is dead and you should move your budget to ads. That is not what the data says. Here is what it does say.
Ranking and being cited are now two different jobs
Ranking number one used to mean you got the click. Now it means you are eligible to be summarised. Being the source an AI quotes is a separate outcome, and it depends on different things: how clearly you answer a specific question, how well structured your content is, and how consistently your business is described across the web.
This is the work we call Generative Engine Optimization. It is not a replacement for search optimisation. It is the second half of the job.
Local and specialist queries are far more protected
Here is the part almost nobody says out loud. AI Overviews appear most often on broad informational questions. They appear far less on local intent searches, on specialist professional queries, and on searches where the person is close to buying.
"What is SEO" gets an AI answer. "Dermatology clinic near Jumeirah with evening appointments" still sends people to real websites and map listings. If your business serves a specific place or a specific specialty, your exposure to this click loss is much lower than a general publisher's.
That is not a reason to relax. It is a reason to concentrate. The safest traffic in 2026 is local, specific and commercial. The most exposed traffic is broad, generic and informational.
Brand searches are the most durable asset you have
An AI answer cannot take a search for your company name away from you. When somebody types your business name, they get you. This is why founder-led visibility, real reviews, PR mentions and word of mouth have quietly become more valuable, not less.
Every piece of content that makes somebody remember your name is content that survives the next algorithm change.
What to do in the next 90 days
You do not need to rebuild anything. You need to shift the balance of your effort.
- Audit which of your pages are exposed. Look at your top traffic pages. The broad, informational ones are at risk. The local and commercial ones are safer. Move effort towards the second group.
- Rewrite your key pages to be quotable. Short, direct answers under clear headings. If an AI cannot lift a clean two-sentence answer from your page, it will lift one from a competitor.
- Fix how consistently your business is described. Same name, same services, same location across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. AI tools build confidence from repetition across sources.
- Build local depth, not generic breadth. One genuinely useful page about your service in your emirate beats five thin national pages.
- Track AI visibility separately from rankings. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your buyers ask. Write down whether you are named. That is now a metric worth watching every month.
- Protect and grow branded demand. Reviews, founder content, partnerships, local press. This is the traffic nobody can summarise away from you.
The honest bottom line
Search is not dying. It is splitting. One half is becoming a conversation where a handful of sources get named. The other half, the local and commercial half, still works close to how it always did and is where most UAE service businesses actually earn revenue.
The businesses that struggle over the next year will be the ones that built their traffic on broad informational content. The businesses that do well will be the ones that own a specific place, a specific specialty, and a name people search for directly.
If you want to see where your business currently stands in AI answers, and which of your pages are most exposed to this shift, request a free audit. We will check what ChatGPT and Gemini say about you today and show you what to fix first.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI Mode mean SEO no longer works?
No. It means the goal has widened. You still need to rank to be eligible for an AI answer, because AI tools draw from pages that already rank well. What has changed is that ranking alone no longer guarantees the click, so being clearly quotable matters as much as being high on the page.
How much traffic will my UAE business lose to AI Overviews?
It depends heavily on what you rank for. The measured average is close to a 40% click loss where an AI Overview appears, but AI Overviews show up far less often on local searches, specialist professional queries and searches with clear buying intent. A local clinic or contractor is far less exposed than a general blog.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI answers?
There are crawler controls that limit some AI training and retrieval, and in some markets publishers have negotiated opt-outs. For most small and medium businesses this is the wrong lever to pull. Blocking AI access removes you from answers your customers are already reading, which usually costs more than it protects.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summary that appears above normal search results. AI Mode is a full conversational search experience where you ask follow-up questions and never see a traditional results page. AI Mode is the more disruptive of the two because it removes the link list entirely.
How do I know if AI tools currently recommend my business?
Ask them. Open ChatGPT and Gemini and type the questions your customers would ask, such as the best provider of your service in your emirate. Note whether you are named, how you are described, and who is named instead. Repeat it monthly. That simple habit tells you more than most dashboards.
Should I move my budget from SEO to paid ads because of this?
Not automatically. Paid ads sit in the same results pages that AI answers are compressing, and costs in competitive UAE categories have been rising. A more sensible response is to keep paid working for immediate demand while shifting organic effort towards local, specialist and answer-ready content that AI tools can cite. If you want a view on the paid side, our guide on when Google Ads and Meta Ads actually work covers it.
