To get cited in Google AI Overviews, your page must first be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Google Search. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special markup. After that, it comes down to clear answers to the questions your buyers ask, on pages Google can crawl and trust.
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of many Google results. Pew Research Center found that 88% of the summaries it studied cited three or more sources, so there is room for more than one company.
How does Google choose AI Overview sources?
Google builds AI Overviews from its normal search index. Its documentation says AI Overviews may use a "query fan-out" technique, running several related searches across subtopics, then linking the pages that support the answer. So the pages it cites are usually pages Google can already find for the question, or for the smaller questions inside it.
Google's guidance is plain: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." Google must be allowed to crawl the page, index it and show a snippet from it.
There is one new switch to check. Search Console now has a Search generative AI control, rolled out to all websites by 31 August 2026. It includes your site by default. If someone sets it to exclude, your pages cannot appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, whatever you publish.
Do you need to rank on page one?
No, but it helps. A March 2026 Ahrefs study of 863,000 keyword results found that 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in Google's top 10 for the same search, and about a third did not rank in the top 100 at all. A page can be cited for answering one of the related questions well.
You need the clearest page for a specific question your buyers ask, not the biggest site. Ahrefs also found YouTube made up 5.6% of all AI Overview citations in its data, so a short video that answers the question is a second way in.
Which searches show an AI Overview?
Mostly questions. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults' searches in March 2025 and found that 60% of searches starting with "who", "what", "when" or "why" produced an AI summary, against 18% of all searches. Seer Interactive found AI Overviews on 36% of informational searches, but only 8% of commercial and 5% of transactional ones.
So ready-to-buy searches rarely show a summary. The questions buyers ask earlier, such as how something works or how two options compare, often do. In Seer's data, informational comparison searches showed an AI Overview 95.4% of the time. Those early questions, the ones your sales team hears on every call, are where citations are won.
What makes a page worth citing?
A page that answers one real question plainly and adds something other pages do not have: your own data, a first-hand example, a clear comparison. Google's guidance asks for "non-commodity" content and says a summary of existing content simply restates information already available elsewhere. Give the answer early, then the detail.
Google also says you do not need to cut pages into tiny chunks or write in a special style for AI. For a B2B company, that means:
- one page for each real buyer question, with the answer near the top
- numbers from your own work, and a named source for every statistic
- the same company facts on your site and your Google Business Profile, which Google says to keep up to date
Do llms.txt or schema help?
Not for Google. Google says you do not need llms.txt files, AI text files or special schema markup to appear in AI Overviews, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt. Structured data is still worth keeping for rich results, but there is no AI Overview markup to add. Spend the time on the page itself.
Google also says chasing inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it looks, and that creating separate pages for every variation of a question, mainly to manipulate AI answers, breaks its spam policies.
Is being cited still worth it?
Yes. AI summaries take clicks whether you are in them or not. Pew found people clicked a normal result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Seer Interactive found that being cited in an AI Overview brought 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited.
Seer is careful with its own numbers. Cited pages still got 38% fewer clicks per impression than searches with no AI Overview at all, and Seer calls its data directional. Pew also found people clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits.
So treat a citation as visibility first. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality: people are more likely to spend more time on the site.
How do you track AI Overview citations?
Start in Search Console. Google's Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all websites by 31 August 2026, shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Then keep a fixed list of buyer questions and check them by hand each month, noting who is cited when you are not.
Traffic from these features sits inside the normal Performance report, under the "Web" search type. Neither report shows what the summary said about you or who was named instead, and Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models, so their links vary. Hence the manual check.
This is the core of an AI visibility audit: your buyers' real questions, tested in Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with who gets named and why.
Where should you start?
With what you already have. Check the Search generative AI control and the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. List the questions your buyers ask before they buy. Search each one, and note whether an AI Overview appears and who it cites. Then fix or write one page per question, answer first.
The report splits impressions by country, so check each market you sell in. For US and UK companies, this is the work we do as an AI SEO agency for B2B companies in the US and an AI SEO agency for UK companies.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop Google using my site in AI Overviews?
Yes. In Search Console, set the Search generative AI control to exclude. Google says content is excluded within one to two days after the change goes live, though some takes longer. You then get no traffic or impressions from these features. Google says the setting is not used as a ranking signal for the rest of Search.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google says Google-Extended limits the training of the models used in its Search generative AI features. It is not the switch for whether your links appear in AI Overviews. That switch is the Search generative AI control in Search Console. To keep a page out of Google Search entirely, Google points to noindex.
How long does it take to be cited after a change?
There is no fixed time, and nobody can honestly promise one. Google has to recrawl the page first, which Google says can take from several days to several months, depending on how often it decides a page needs refreshing. You can ask Google to recrawl a page.
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews appear above normal results, and only when Google decides they add something. AI Mode is for questions that need more exploration, reasoning or comparison. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so their links vary. The rules for being eligible as a supporting link are the same.
